Hands-On & Creative Activities
1. Color Scavenger Hunt = Búsqueda de Colores
Download the list below to give to students to read on their own or with a partner. The color word is listed in both English and Spanish (e.g., “rojo/red”) then they can write the name of the object or draw a picture of the object they found.
2. Color Sorting with Objects
Use blocks, buttons, pompoms, or colorful beads. Place either small colorful plates or laminated papers for each color (to use as a mat). Have students sort by color and as they sort, have them say the color word in Spanish and English.
3. Color Mixing Art
Take kid-friendly paint and place a bit on a plate. Have students mix pains to discover new colors and name them in both languages. You can control how much paint you place on the plate and decide which colors the students will mix for them to make the discovery of the new color they make.
- Example: azul + amarillo = verde // blue + yellow = green
If you don’t have access to paint, you can also use playdough. Make your own playdough with the recipe below. Very easy to make and you can make it over and over again as many times as you’d like. If you don’t have time to make it yourself, you can always just buy it at your local grocery store.
4. Rainbow Craft / Arcoiris
There are so many crafts you can do with rainbow. Which include:
- Tissue Paper Rainbow
- Coloring a Rainbow with both color words on each band in English and Spanish
- Rainbow Names for Rainbow Week
- You cut small squares of construction paper and students glue the squares on a paper with their name (written or printed) on a large paper (see picture below)
5. Color Collage from Magazines
Collect kid-friendly magazines from your friends, family or co-workers to donate for this project. Have students cut out picture of objects and gue them onto their collage page. Example: red/rojo page or green/verde page.

6. Color Bingo
Bingo is always a fun game to play in small or whole group class settings. Use a bingo board with colors or colored objects. Practice calling out the color in Spanish or English.

7. Simon Says – Simón Dice
Kids love playing games and this would be an engaging brain break for your students. It’s a great activity for movement and listening comprehension. An example of this would be “Simón dice toca algo azul // Simon says touch something blue.” You can have students touch things on a colorful print out for a small group. Caution: Always set some ground rules before they move around the classroom.
8. Color Hopscotch
Create hopscotch squares in different colors or take this activity outside and use colorful chalk. Call out “verde/green” and students jumpt to the correct square. In my opinion, I would make several hopscotch placements for kids to play in small groupings.
9. Musical Colors
Place colored mats or construction paper around the room. Play music, then call out a color in Spanish/English when the music stops, students can run to the matching color. This is a great outdoor activity where you can also utilize colorful hula hoops. If you’re a teacher, reach out to the PE teacher to get your hula hoops. Otherwise, use laminated color placemats you can tape down to the floor. Caution: Make sure students to trip or slide on the lamination.
10. Guess the Color – Adivina el Color
With this game you will need a paper bag or any other type of bag that is not see through. Hide small objects in the bag that are the colors of the rainbow. In Spanish or English you will give a clue and then students will have to guess the color. The objects can be any small object that you can fit into your bag.
