Literacy Activities for Language Development

Bilingual Winter Word Hunt

Above all, you can have a Fun Winter Day and get students up and around the room with a Write Around the Room Activity! All you need is a clipboard, pencil, a recording page, and picture vocabulary cards.

Use visuals and place them around the room or home, encouraging kids to say the word in both languages. You could use Flash Cards to place around the room and have students write the words on a paper. Check out the “Write the Room Activity” below.

Seasonal Storytelling

Winter-themed stories! Make them verbal or put them in writing. Better yet, make a video presentation and turn it into a Visual Project! Students use vocabulary from both languages to write their stories in class. Teachers can pair up students to write bilingual stories together or independently. Kids at home can have parents help younger children tell stories in both languages.

Use Winter picture cards for story telling or picture prompt pages for kids to write a story, it can open up their imagination. You can encourage kids to use more vocabulary that way.

Try using the Picture Prompts below to promote their storytelling skills in Spanish or English. Encourage students to label the pictures.

Bilingual Book Reading List

As a teacher you can provide a Book Reading List for your students and their families to read at home together. In the classroom, I would have students take a Reading Tracker for parents to write in the titles of the books that they read with their kids. Additionally, at home you can use a Book Reading Tracker of your choice to keep track of all of the Bilingual Books that you have read for the season.

Winter Theme Field Trip

A field trip to an Ice Skating Rink, a local Farm, or a Children’s Museum Winter Exhibit is always a fun idea. All in all, if you have time to you can plan something ahead of time with your teacher team. If you are a parent you can take some time during your Winter Break to plan something for your kids. Furthermore, you can plan a week of Winter Theme Activities leading up to the field trip. One of those activities could be a Reading Passage about Life in the Winter.

Bilingual Poetry Writing

Introduce children to simple winter-themed poetry, like acrostic poems or haikus. Create a haiku about falling snow. Create an acrostic poem for each letter of “Invierno” or “Winter.”
